What is APA?

APA is a natural health system founded on the use of essential oils for animals. It works on the psyche of the animal to reduce stress and increase health using aromatic extracts, behavioural management, natural nutrition and owner education.

This holistic approach to animal wellness fosters an internal and external environment that leads to balanced health. APA teaches animal guardians how to use essential oils safely for horses, dogs and cats. It also helps owners to better understand and provide the natural needs of all our essential animals.

Essential Oils for Animals

In the wild, animals pick and choose the healing plants they need to help them stay in optimal health. This is known scientifically as zoopharmacognosy. When working with essential oils, we use this instinct and allow the animal to choose what they need, just as they would in the wild.

The simple act of returning some autonomy of care to the animal is the first step in the healing process. It is mind-blowing to watch an animal direct its own healing by responding to the oils instinctively, choosing whether to take them orally, topically or as an inhalant.

This method is safe and effective, and it also greatly strengthens the bond of trust between the animal and the guardian.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are potent extracts of aromatic plants. Almost every plant contains some essential oil in the flowers, roots, leaves or bark. The fragrance of a rose or a cypress tree is an essential oil that is released into the air.

Depending on the plant, essential oils have various functions. They may act as hormones, attract insects for pollination, repel insects or competing plants or protect the plant from bacterial invasion.

How Do Essential Oils Work?

Essential oils are highly volatile, as they release their fragrance in an explosion as soon as they are exposed to air. Because they are made up of very small molecules, they pass easily from the olfactory system, through the mucous membranes and into the brain and blood, affecting the nervous system.

Essential oils have a physiological and psychological affect.

Animal Reiki

Reiki is a hands-on or distant healing technique that rebalances energy which flows through the body. Every living organism is surrounded by a life force or energy field. Reiki practitioners are able to access this force and use it for healing.

This practice clears blockages within the body and re-aligns the body's energy, restoring balance and harmony. It is a non-invasive treatment.

The duration of a Reiki treatment varies depending on the situation. Most hands-on treatments last around 45 minutes. This is dependent on the animal choosing hands-on Reiki. Distant treatments are shorter.

When receiving a Reiki treatment, animals commonly enter a state of deep relaxation and peace. They may sigh, yawn, doze, fall asleep or enter a deep state of meditation. Most animals notice health improvements.

A Reiki treatment will affect the emotions more than the physical being. This is because Reiki finds the issues that are most in need of healing. Often, physical problems have emotional roots. Reiki will often go first to the deepest issues and then work “outward” through associated issues over a series of treatment.

Experienced in Reiki Treatments

Our owner, Caroline, has completed her Masters Animal Reiki with Kathleen Prasad. Her approach and respect of animals and their needs have given her a greater depth and understanding and connection to the animals we work with.

She is the first international member of Shelter Animal Reiki Association or SARA, which supports animal practitioners to implement professional, effective and ethical Animal Reiki programmes within their Rescue Centre. It is a non-profit organisation.

Through Kathleen's teachings, Caroline lets the animal choose their own healing, preferring ‘hands-off’ until the animal initiates ‘hands-on’ Reiki.

If you are interested in our Reiki treatments, an in-depth consultation form needs to be completed. Contact us through phone or email to purchase a Reiki Treatment. Please note that your vet always remains responsible for the health and welfare of your animal.
